Q: I have a G4 and I want to restore it to be more modern and updated I haven’t used it in more than a year because I purchased a desktop and so now my daughter’s laptop is not working and I want to give this to her. But I want to give it a newer feeling since the last time I updated was when the OS was Tiger I think. Is there a way to do this or a Mac shop area that anyone knows of?

A. Your best bet would be to take it to the Apple Store nearest to your location.

Mac’s (and Apple, for that matter) are proprietary. Meaning there’s not really much a personal user can do with it. It’s locked down tight, unlike PCs.

Also: with the laptop being the age it is (Around 8-9 years or so,) the people at the Apple store may just tell you to get a new computer. Anything that old is outdated by a good margin, and most support for it has been discontinued.

I would recommend purchasing a Windows (or failing that, a Linux) based machine from a PC manufacturer like Dell, HP, or Asus.

How do i convince my parents i need a mac rather than a PC?

14. Macs have a future. Windows development has virtually stalled. Only one major release in over 10 years and that was widely panned. It’s successor is heading the same way (they had to give it away for anyone to use it).
15. Macs are true 64bit and don’t waste resources. Most Windows machines are 32bit and limited to using 3Gig of Ram out 4.
16. Mac’s don’t bog the system down by supporting legacy programs from 20 years ago that no-one uses anymore. It’s the most advanced operating system on the market today.
17. Networking is dead simple, even a 5 year old could do it.
18. It’s a one stop shop. If you have an issue, you see Apple. You don’t need to see a hundred other companies who all blame each other.
19. Expose, Spaces and Spotlight search.
20. Whenever you get an OS upgrade, your system works faster, more efficiently and does more neat things without adding any hardware.
